What is a task assignment generator?

A task assignment generator distributes a task list among a group of people. This tool shuffles the people and tasks, gives every task exactly one owner, and balances the number of tasks so that no two people differ by more than one assignment.

How to use the task assignment generator

  1. Enter 2–50 people, one per line. Use distinct labels for people with the same name.
  2. Enter 1–200 tasks, one per line. Repeated task lines count as separate assignments.
  3. Assign tasks and review each person’s list. Counts differ by at most one.
  4. Copy the full result or download CSV/TXT. Assign again creates a fresh random allocation.

Try this workflow

Enter four people and the eight example setup tasks. Select Assign tasks. Everyone receives two tasks, with every original task appearing once. Add a ninth task and generate again: one randomly positioned person receives three, and the other three receive two.

Ways to use this tool

Event setup

Distribute a set of comparable setup jobs across volunteers. Review assignments for practical fit before using them.

Shared chores

Share a list of small chores when each person can do any task. Each run starts fresh and does not track past turns.

Workshop roles

Assign activity tasks to participants and export a readable responsibility list for the session.

Balanced counts are not balanced workloads

The tool independently shuffles people and tasks, then deals tasks around the shuffled people in a cycle. Every task entry is used exactly once.

For t tasks and p people, each person gets either floor(t ÷ p) or ceil(t ÷ p) tasks. When tasks are fewer than people, some people receive none for that run.

Blank lines are ignored and surrounding spaces are trimmed. Duplicate text is preserved as separate entries. CSV includes person_entry and task_entry numbers so identical labels remain distinguishable.

No duration, difficulty, skill, availability, exclusion or history constraints are applied. Equal task counts can still represent unequal work. Review the result where those differences matter.

Keep and share your result

Exports use the current result without generating again. After editing inputs, generate a new result to apply the changes.

Your entered names, words, clues and tasks are processed in this browser. These tools do not upload them, put them in the URL, store them in browser storage or include them in analytics events. Refreshing or leaving the page discards the current result. General site analytics still run; see the privacy policy.

Task Assignment Generator FAQs

Will every task be assigned exactly once?

Yes. Every nonblank task line is a separate entry and gets one owner. Duplicate task text remains separate work entries.

How does it split nine tasks among four people?

One person gets three tasks and the other three get two. Shuffling people makes the extra-task positions random for that run.

What if I have fewer tasks than people?

Some people receive no task and are shown explicitly. The remaining people each receive one task.

Does it balance task difficulty or rotate fairly over time?

No. It balances counts within the current run only. It does not record past allocations or evaluate difficulty, time, skills or availability.

Can I export the assignments?

Yes. Copy assignments and Download TXT provide a grouped list. CSV includes entry numbers, people and tasks; formula-like text receives a leading apostrophe for spreadsheet safety.
