What is a seating chart generator?

A seating chart generator assigns a roster to labeled positions in a room. This random seating chart maker uses a rectangular grid of rows and columns, leaves spare seats empty, and lets you lock occupied seats before reshuffling the remaining people.

How to use the seating chart generator

  1. Paste 1–100 names, one per line. Give people with the same name different labels.
  2. Set 1–10 rows and 1–10 columns. Total seats must be at least the roster count.
  3. Generate a chart. Click occupied seats to lock or unlock them, then shuffle again as needed.
  4. Copy the labeled chart or download its current layout as PNG or A4 PDF.

Try this workflow

Paste eight names, choose three rows and three columns, then generate. One seat stays empty. Click an occupied seat such as A1 to mark it fixed, then select Shuffle seats. That person stays at A1 while the unlocked positions are reassigned.

Ways to use this tool

Classroom seating

Start with a random arrangement, then keep particular occupied seats fixed between shuffles. Review the plan against the actual room before using it.

Workshops

Mix participants across a rectangular set of seats for a session. Copy seat labels into your session notes.

Repeated activities

Retain a few fixed positions while redistributing everyone else. Each shuffle is independent and may repeat some earlier positions.

Fixed seats, empty places and roster changes

Rows are labeled A–J from the front of the room and columns are numbered left to right. A1 is the front-left position in the displayed chart.

Only occupied seats can be locked. With unchanged inputs, a locked person keeps that exact seat. All remaining people and available positions are shuffled.

Changing any roster text or either dimension resets locks when you next generate. The existing chart remains available for export until then, with a notice that it belongs to the previous inputs.

This is a rectangular seating planner. It does not enforce friendship, separation, accessibility, skill or behavior constraints, and it does not model round tables or blocked seats.

Keep and share your result

Exports use the current result without generating again. After editing inputs, generate a new result to apply the changes. Downloaded PDFs use high-resolution page images on A4 paper; they are printable but their text is not selectable. Use available copy or CSV options when you need editable text.

Your entered names, words, clues and tasks are processed in this browser. These tools do not upload them, put them in the URL, store them in browser storage or include them in analytics events. Refreshing or leaving the page discards the current result. General site analytics still run; see the privacy policy.

Seating Chart Generator FAQs

Can I keep a student in the same seat?

Yes. Generate first, then click that occupied seat to mark it fixed. Shuffle seats preserves it as long as the roster and dimensions are unchanged.

What if there are more seats than people?

Extra seats stay empty. Empty positions can move on a later shuffle because only occupied fixed seats are retained.

Can I use the same name twice?

Yes. Each nonblank line is a separate person. Add distinguishing labels so you can tell them apart in the chart and exports.

Can I print my seating chart?

Yes. Download seating PDF creates an A4 chart; Download PNG creates an image of the same layout. Copy chart gives seat labels and names as text.

Does this separate particular pairs of students?

No. The available rule is a fixed occupied seat. Relationship and separation rules are not part of this version.
