Put your whole list in a random order

A list randomizer puts every entry in a list into a random order. Paste one item per line, then shuffle to create a complete sequence for presentation slots, game turns, task order or a playlist. Your original list stays unchanged beside the result.

Every line gets one position. Duplicate entries stay in the result unless you explicitly remove them. Copy a plain list, add position numbers, or download the exact order as TXT or CSV.

How to randomize a list

  1. Paste your original list. Put one name, word or task on each line. A single spreadsheet column works too; leave out the heading. Commas within a line stay part of that item.
  2. Check duplicates. Keep repeated entries when they are intentional. Select Remove duplicate items only if you want one copy of each exact trimmed line.
  3. Select Shuffle list. Read the full randomized sequence in the result panel. The number of positions matches the eligible input count.
  4. Use the order. Copy plain lines to a spreadsheet, include positions for a schedule, or download TXT/CSV. Shuffle again creates another order; Undo shuffle restores the immediately previous one.

Try this workflow: ten entries, including a duplicate

Paste ten names with Aster appearing on two separate lines. Leave Remove duplicate items unchecked and select Shuffle list. The result has ten positions and still contains Aster twice. Copy the list as plain lines for a spreadsheet column, or include positions for a running order.

For a speaking order, give same-name participants distinct labels before shuffling. For repeated game entries, leave the repeated text as it is.

Ways to use a randomized list

Presentation order

Shuffle a class or workshop roster so every participant gets a numbered turn. Keep a copy of the result for the session.

Task and activity order

Mix a set of practice questions, writing prompts or activities when any order is acceptable. The tool does not evaluate task priority or dependencies.

Games and playlists

Create a random turn order or rearrange song titles. Intentional repeats remain separate entries, so the result preserves the list you supplied.

How the list shuffler handles randomness and duplicates

The randomizer uses a Fisher–Yates shuffle with Web Crypto random values. Rejection sampling avoids modulo bias when choosing each swap. For three distinct entries A, B and C, the six possible orders each have a 1 in 6 chance.

A shuffle can leave an item in the same position or produce an earlier order again. Forcing every result to look different would change the sampling rule, so this tool allows those outcomes.

  • Repeated lines are entries: two identical lines occupy two positions by default. They are shuffled independently, even though their displayed text is the same.
  • Optional deduplication is exact: surrounding spaces are trimmed, then identical lines collapse into one. Capitalization matters.
  • Blank lines are skipped: they do not produce empty positions. Text inside each nonblank line is kept, including commas and quotation marks.
  • Input and result stay separate: editing the source list leaves the previous result visible until you shuffle again. A notice identifies that older result.

Copy to a spreadsheet or download the order

Copy list and Download TXT use one item per line. Enable Include positions in text exports for lines such as “1. Aster”. Changing that option does not reshuffle anything.

Download CSV always includes position and item columns. Commas and quotation marks are escaped. Entries beginning with a spreadsheet formula marker receive a leading apostrophe to keep them as text; use a plain TXT export when you need the original characters without that CSV safeguard.

Your input and results remain in this page’s memory. They are not uploaded, placed in the URL, saved to browser storage or included in analytics events. General site usage analytics still run; see the privacy policy. Save an export before leaving or refreshing.

List randomizer FAQs

How do I randomize a list?

Paste one item per line and select Shuffle list. You can paste a single column from Excel or Google Sheets without its heading. The randomizer returns all entries in a new random order, leaving the original input unchanged. Use between 2 and 1,000 entries, with up to 200 characters per entry.

Does shuffling remove duplicate items?

No. Duplicate lines are preserved by default, so two entries with the same text remain two entries in the result. Enable Remove duplicate items only when duplicates are accidental. Deduplication compares trimmed text exactly and is case-sensitive: Alex and alex remain separate.

Can I copy or download the randomized list?

Yes. Copy list and Download TXT use the same order shown in the result. They contain one item per line; enable Include positions in text exports to add numbering. Download CSV includes position and item columns. Formula-like CSV entries receive a leading apostrophe so spreadsheet applications treat them as text.

Is every possible order equally likely?

The tool uses a Fisher–Yates shuffle driven by browser Web Crypto random values, with rejection sampling to avoid modulo bias. Every ordering of the list entries is equally likely. An item may remain in its original position, and a later shuffle may repeat an earlier order. These are valid random outcomes.

Can I undo a shuffle, and is my list saved?

Undo shuffle restores the immediately previous result once. Editing the input does not change an existing result until you shuffle again. The list and results stay in this page’s memory and are not uploaded, included in analytics events, or saved to browser storage. Download anything you need before refreshing or leaving.
