Using Random Team Generator — Split a List

A random team generator shuffles a roster and assigns every entry to a group. Use it for a classroom activity, workshop or casual game. Number of teams keeps the group count fixed; People per team limits each group’s size. It does not balance ability or other participant attributes.

Try this workflow

For 30 participants and six activity stations, paste one name per line, choose Number of teams, enter 6 and generate. The result contains six teams of five. Copy teams to a document, download TXT, or use Display teams for a shared screen.

How are extra participants assigned?

By team count, seven participants in three teams produces 3/2/2. By maximum size, seven participants with three per team produces 3/3/1. The preview shows the sizes before you generate. Requesting more teams than participants creates one team per participant.

What happens when two participants have the same name?

Both entries remain by default. Add distinguishing labels if needed. Remove duplicate names removes identical trimmed lines, so enable it only for accidental duplicates. Blank lines are ignored.

Can I copy, download or display my groups?

Yes. Generate first, then choose Copy teams, Download TXT or Display teams. Press Escape or Exit display to return. Download a result you need to keep after leaving the page.

Can I undo a regroup or edit the roster?

Undo regroup restores one previous grouping. Editing names or settings does not change existing teams until you generate again; copying before that copies the previous result.

Does the tool keep friends together or balance skill?

No. It randomly shuffles roster entries and follows the selected size rule. It has no skill, friendship or separation constraints. A preset link shares an example setup, not your roster or generated teams.
